Territorial Expansion

I’ve had a little success showing my photographs in the last three years —- sixteen shows, one or two photos per show. When I began getting serious about photography, I never imagined my work framed and hanging on a wall that wasn’t inside my home. In Washington DC some photography friends helped organize a couple of home shows; we’d get together without much preparation and hang our stuff on the walls of someone’s home or in the hallway of a condo building and invite our friends to stop by and look around. It doesn’t sound like much, but it gave me a certain confidence that my photos said something to people. I even sold a small flower print for $10. Here’s a flier for the first Fotoklub show.

Since moving to Arizona I’ve had work accepted in 18 shows, most of them juried. Until last month all of the exhibitions have been in the Tucson or the greater Phoenix area.

Since July 1 two older prints accepted into out of state shows, “In a Dark Wood,” (2017) for The SE Center for Photography Virtual Gallery, based in Greenville SC, September 1 -30, and “Gateway” (2018) has been accepted to hang in the Photo Place Gallery in Middlebury VT during the month of September. I submitted 5 photos to each call for entries, and I don’t think these were the strongest of the 10. These are the only B&W images of the 10, so that should tell me something, maybe that I’m not using color to its greatest advantage.

I’ve also sold a couple of prints this year, though that’s not necessarily my purpose for submitting photographs. I’m happy if a photogrpah clicks with a viewer enough to make them stop and look and think for awhile. I won’t lie: It’s a kick to see something you created hanging on a wall alongside the work of other photographers. And to think that someone clear across the country might stop in front of my photo is even better.
